Pregnancy & Motherhood

I have been a single mother for all of my daughter's life. I became pregnant at 15 years old after I made the mistake of having sex with a guy I knew for a couple of months. It was also my first time. He used a condom but I still got pregnant. After I took a home pregnancy test, it confirmed what I feared most. Once I told him I was pregnant he said I was trying to trap him and I haven't seen or heard from him since.

I told my mother and although she was disappointed, she supported me in my decision to keep my baby. Once my daughter was born she helped me to take care of her. I didn't have to quit school to take care of my daughter and was fortunate enough that my high school had a daycare program. I graduated high school with honors and started taking courses at a community college. I studied really hard and took nursing classes to be able to provide for me and my daughter.

teen-pregnantAs much as I love her I wish that she learned by watching how hard it was for me to take care of a child at an early age. I had the sex talk with her when she was 12 and thought we were on the same page.I believed I got through to her but now she is going to be a young mother just like me. I was hoping and praying she wouldn't follow my footsteps but here we are.

We discussed the choices she has regarding her pregnancy and the baby. She does not want to put the baby up for adoption and abortion is definitely out of the question. In her case the baby's father and his parents will be helping out as much as they could, so I'm told...but I won't hold my breath. I'm prepared to be there to help my daughter out just like my mother was there for me.

Her baby is due in just five short months and we're hoping he or she will be healthy and the rest will work itself out. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine someone would be calling me grandma when I'm in my 30's.

I am 35 years old and have a 21 year old daughter. I got pregnant at 13 and had her at 14. My mother was a big help. You always get through it and remember a child is a gift from god.

Here's the sequence:
Oh Sh*t!! YOU'RE WHAT!!!
Ultra sound day: It's a girl; you say with tears in your eyes.
Delivery moment: Who's in the delivery room? Is it Grandma?? I bet it is!!

It is heart break to see our children make the same mistakes as we did but just think how much bigger a mistake she could have made. She could be in a strip club with a needle in her arm waiting for her turn to go up on stage? Celebrate her success! Sometimes small mistakes can be the biggest incentives!
