There are many birth control methods available to prevent pregnancy in women.  Abstinence is the only option which is 100% effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.  Other methods of birth control are condoms (for men and women), diaphragms, IUD's, Nuva rings, Depo Provera shots, Ortho Evra (patches), birth control implants, cervical caps, Vasectomy, and the withdrawal method.  Emergency contraception (morning after pill) is available preventing pregnancy up to five days after unprotected sex.

After the birth of my daughter, I chose the Depo Provera shot for birth control and continued it for two years. During the course of my pregnancy I had blood drawn on a regular basis so I actually got used to needles. What I liked about it was not having to remember to take a birth control pill everyday.  The Depo Provera shot lasts for three months and it is 97 - 99.7% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Advantages

  • It is a private method of birth control.
  • Becomes effective after 24 hours.
  • depoproveraProvides long-lasting pregnancy protection.
  • Does not contain estrogen.
  • Decreases the risk of uterine and ovarian cancers.
  • Good choice for breastfeeding moms.
  •

    Disadvantages

  • Requires injections.
  • Irregular bleeding.
  • Weight gain in most women.
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Causes loss of bone density and risk of osteoporosis.
  • May take  up to 18 months or longer to become pregnant after discontinuing shot.
  •

Although the Depo Provera shot was a convenient form of birth control, I discontinued it after two years. I became concerned after my periods became very irregular and eventually stopped altogether. My doctor told me it was perfectly normal but it just didn't sit right with me.  Over time my husband and I decided our family was complete and he got a vasectomy.  Since the procedure, we no longer spend money on birth control and there are no side effects to deal with. It's been great ever since.

0 #1 Depo Provera shot ruined my lifeDanielle 2011-07-01 08:30

I tried Depo and for the first 3 months it was AMAZING. It was the 2nd shot 3 months later that was absolutely horrible. The first morning after my 2nd shot I woke up covered in acne. My skin had been clear my entire life with very minimal pimples ever. But that morning I was COVERED in thousands of whiteheads all over my face and back and chest. I freaked out and immediately jumped into the shower to try and clean my skin. It was there that my nightmare intensified. My long hair started falling out in clumps. Huge clumps of hair. The drain was instantly clogged and it didn’t stop falling out. My hands were coated and covered with my own hair.

I sank down to the floor of the shower sobbing thinking that there was no way this was happening and that I must be sleeping and I would eventually wake up. I laid there until the water turned cold and forced me out of the shower. I slowly walked to the mirror horrified to even look. So much hair had fallen out that I had bald spots. Full areas with no hair at all. My skill was so covered and discolored from the acne that I felt like I was looking at a stranger in the mirror. All I could do was cry. As if that was not bad enough I then proceeded to get my period for the next 3 months straight. I was slightly anemic before and this caused me to be weak and need to take much stronger iron pills to combat the constant bleeding. When I called my DR he informed me that is why they put warnings on these things and there was no way to know how my body was going to react. My skin eventually cleared up, the constant bleeding stopped but years later my hair has never really recovered.
