The Welfare System Rant PDF Print E-mail
Rants and Raves

I decided to vent my frustrations regarding how the majority of people on government assistance abuse the system.  It makes my blood boil when I go food shopping the first week of the month and the lines at the store are super long and stock is low because the welfare checks kicked in. Often times, I see young, not disabled in any way and capable of holding down a job individuals who whip out their welfare debit card which pays for all of the items in their shopping cart. Sometimes they have two full carts of stuff.

Is it not enough that they get free health care, which includes dentists and specialists? Is it not enough that they don't have to pay rent and often have free or reduced utilities?

Welfare-system-rantPeople like me have to work our a$$ off to make ends meet and get raped in taxes which pay for these low-lives, while they sit at home doing absolutely nothing. There are generations after generations of people who live off of others hard earned money. And why would they get off their butts and get a JOB when everything is provided for them free of charge. They keep having kid after kid to make their monthly payout larger and have no intention of taking care of their kids and raising them to be responsible adults. They too will follow in their parents footsteps. It's no wonder this country is going down the tube.

I firmly believe in helping people in times of need or if the person cannot hold down a job because of a disability of some sort, but most people on welfare don't fall in that category. There needs to be a limit of no more than two years for these lazy people to receive welfare benefits and all the freebies that go with it. That is plenty of time to get your act together and get a job like everyone else. Also, if you choose to bring kids into this world it is your job alone to take care of them.

End of Rant.

As a working single mother, I once applied for public assistance. Given $50 in food stamps per month, which I never used. I was too embarrassed to use them, I did not re-apply after that 1st month.

Rather, worked 2 jobs to support myself & my baby as his father never paid a dime of the court appointed $50 per month child support; I never asked for alimony.
I dropped my 2 year old at day care each morning at 6:30 AM, we both cried. I picked him up after job #1, to drop him at another evening sitters home to work job #2; again we both cried. I had 1/2 hour between jobs to pick him up & drop him off. I weighed 90 lbs. Just so we would not be on public assistance. I remember nothing of my son from age 2 to age 5,only our tears. I paid our rent, food, child care, and gas for the old jalopy I drove around.

Not everyone wants a hand out, nor steaks, cakes & sodas. Many of us truly needed help but did it on our own, hoping another mom would have the help we turned down. Do it again? On welfare for sure.

Couldn't agree more. I feel there are people out there who need assistance, but too many people that don't are using it. And honestly, if you can't pay for it, then no, your kids shouldn't have junk food, little debbie or whatever. That is a bad habit anyway. They should have someone that works taking care of them. Work from home, sit at a computer. You can do SOMETHING!

You should only be able to buy necessities with food stamps. Not giant beef jerky and processed crap to feed your kids. I think if you could only buy the bare minimum that you need to survive, then you might have a little more ambition to get a job so you could give your children a special treat. This country is going to hell in a hand basket. While you're at it, just go commit a crime. Have you seen the jail system? Some punishment! TV, internet, working out, food on the table and no work. Nice.... real nice America....

Quoting nannytoo:
I believe the government should drug test anyone on public assistance, whether it be food stamps, TANF, SSI, or section 8.

AGREED! I work as a nurse in a city hospital and EVERY SINGLE DAY we are admitting 18-26yr old heroin overdoses who are using government provided healthcare insurance and are on disability. Some of these kids, I have personally treated on more than one occasion.

It's ridiculous that I have to work 12 hour shifts overnight from 7pm-7am to afford my home and provide for my family while some 23yr old girl with 3 kids (that their grandmom is now raising) can receive free housing and party all night drinking and doing drugs.

And why should she clean up her act and get a job and get off welfare when everything she needs is given to her free of charge? There is such a lack of self-worth, work ethic and morality with many young adults anymore. It's just a "Me first/I'm the only one who matters" mentality anymore.

If I have to submit to random drug screenings to work in my hospital, busting my a$$ overnight to make a living....it seems only fair to me that the 23yr old heroin junkie sl*t should be held to the same standard.

you can't always tell by looking at someone if they have medical issues that make them unable to work. I'm 40 yrs old and unfortunately have to rely on food stamps and disability medicaid to help raise my 12 yr old daughter and 4 yr old grandson who I have custody of. I had a 11 hr back surgery where some VERY big mistake was made, which has left me disabled and in constant pain. Now, in addition to the depression, pain, and self-worth issues that have accompanied my disability, I have to endure the dirty looks and rude comments I see and hear when I buy groceries with my food stamps card. I hear comments about buying my kids ice cream or lil debbies.

I'm sorry, but because of a surgeon's screw-up, my kids don't deserve to have treats? I worked hard all my life, and would LOVE to still be doing so, but that's not a choice anymore. I'm a good mom, I keep my house clean, and I fix a home-cooked dinner every night...even if there's tears from the pain running down my face as I'm doing it. So, just because I'm having a good day and I'm able to walk around the grocery store, don't think you know what my life is like.

On the other hand, there are A LOT of people who abuse the system who should be working and paying their own way. I believe the government should drug test anyone on public assistance, whether it be food stamps, TANF, SSI, or section 8. I also believe if you are on assistance, you should be required to get the birth control shot or implant so you cannot get pregnant just to continue getting benefits. There's always going to be some who figure out a way to scam the system, but please don't be so cynical to think that everyone is.

My end thought is this, be glad you're healthy and have a job that can be taxed, because not everyone has that choice. God bless and have a good day.
